NEWS RELEASE:

__________  2016-2017 SCHOOL REGISTRATION ________       

Registration for new students entering the Tiverton Public Schools for the 2016-2017 school year will begin Monday, April 11, 2016.  Registration is open to residents of Tiverton with children who will reach age five on or before September 1, 2016 as well as resident families planning to transfer children into the public school system.

Applications to register are available for parents and guardians now. You can download the application at www.tivertonschools.org. Hard copies can be picked up at the Administration Office, 100 North Brayton Road (door #18 at the rear of the high school.)

Once you have completed the entire registration packet, please call 401-624-8475 x209 to schedule an appointment to review the forms and required documentation in person with a member of our staff.  Parent/guardians must be present for the appointment and provide their photo ID, the student’s original birth certificate, immunization records and two forms of proof of residency for copying, as well as all the completed registration forms.  Your original documents will be returned to you.

Immunization records must be submitted before pupils are admitted to school.

Regulations require that Kindergarteners have the immunizations listed below:

  1.       DTaP - 5 doses, with the last dose given after the fourth birthday
2.       Poliomyelitis - 4 doses, with the last dose given after the fourth birthday
3.       Measles, Mumps, Rubella  (MMR) - 2 doses, first dose after the first birthday, second dose after the fourth birthday
4.       Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b) vaccine – 3 doses
5.       Hepatitis B Vaccine:  3 doses
6.       Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine- 2 doses
7.       Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine -4 doses
8.       Evidence of lead screening per our state guidelines

9.       Record of a recent physical exam (including a vision examination)
10.     Record of a dental examination


Additional vaccinations are required for students entering 7th & 12th grades.

The school department will provide a free developmental screening for each incoming Kindergartner by appointment during the final week in May. Once your child’s complete registration is submitted, this appointment will be scheduled.

Congratulations to Bethany Alvarez, a senior at Tiverton High School, for completing the Hyannis Marathon on February 28, 2016 with a time of 4 hours and 49 minutes.  Training for and completing a marathon was Bethany's Senior Project. Her research focused on the physiological and psychological effects on the mind and body from training for a marathon.  During the training period she ran over 700 miles.  Bethany's Senior Project mentor was THS cross country coach Mr. Brad Botvin.

Electronic Devices (new)

No electronic devices of any kind, (including cellular phones, iPods, and electronic games, etc.) will be allowed to interrupt classroom activities. Electronic devices may be used only during lunch, senior lounge, during the time students pass for classes, or in the classroom with permission of the classroom teacher. Items that disrupt and/or interrupt the learning process will be confiscated and returned at the end of the period. If a student should refuse, it will be turned over to the main office and may be picked up at the end of the school day. If the offense is repeated, a parent or guardian must pick up the item.  Students using their device in the hallway during class time will be escorted to the office to turn in their device. Students are expected to be mindful and respectful of others when using their devices.

The use of the cell phone to take pictures is prohibited. Students taking pictures with cell phones could be subject to suspension at the discretion of administration.

A reminder, use of  cellphones for illegal purposes or misuse of the 911 system is punishable under the school discipline code and the law.

Tiverton High School is 1 of 12 RI High Schools chosen to participate in a grant opportunity by the Office of Naval Research.  "Strengthening the STEM Pipeline" is a grant to improve high school physics, engineering and math instruction. 
The grant will provide Tiverton High School with:
  • 100 e-books for physics and engineering
  • Six fully equipped "hands-on" lab stations
  • Hard Copy Texts
  • Six Ergobot Interactive Robot Dynamic Motion Apparatus (programmable) for each classroom
  • Teacher training (Physics teacher - Richard Bernardo, Calculus teacher - Michelle Bennett)
Tiverton High will be able to utilize this highly innovative, state of the art program in Physics, Mathematics, & Engineering applications in classrooms once training is completed.

Tiverton High School's graduation rate of 95% places us in the top 10 of RI public high schools according to recent data published by the Rhode Island Department of Education.  Congratulations to students, their parents and the staff at THS.
